Difference between laser printer ink and dot matrix ribbons

Dot matrix printers were considered as useful printers and dot matrix printers were the most popular printers till laser printers were introduced in the market. Dot matrix printers were soon replaced by laser printers since laser printers provided high quality prints and colored prints which was something that dot matrix printers could not do. Since the heart of all printers is the ink, laser printer ink was considered as the number one factor for the fall of the dot matrix printer and this article is going to elaborate about the difference between the ink used in laser printers and dot matrix ribbons.

Laser printers use specialized ink known as laser printer ink and this ink is available in cartridges. The quality of this ink is considered very superior hence the quality of the prints that are made using this ink is excellent. Dot matrix printers on the other hand print through a ribbon and characters or illustrations are printed only when the pins related to the characters strike against an ink ribbon. The prints created by the dot matrix ribbons are not of good quality and the quality of these prints is no where compared to that created by laser print ink.

Since a lot of ink is used to create good quality prints, most laser printer ink cartridges run out after 150 to 200 prints. Dot matrix printers on the other hand provide 500 to 700 prints per ribbon and this printer is good if the user prints a lot of documents. It is important to remember that laser printers can use both colored ink and black ink but dot matrix printers can use only black ink to create prints. Laser printer ink cartridges can be refilled twice without causing harm to the printer head and certain companies refill laser printer ink cartridges of all makes by all companies. Dot matrix ribbons need to be replaced every time the ribbon wears out and these ribbons are quite expensive.

In order to use laser printer ink a number of printers can be used and these printers are reasonably priced due to the competition in the market. Dot matrix printers on the other hand are comparatively more expensive since not many people use them and dot matrix printers are difficult to find.
